Kirk Douglas Theatre replaces 'Tynan' with David Cale's one-man
show, 'Palomino'
March 26, 2010
"Palomino," David Cale's new one-man show about a mysterious and
charming Central Park carriage driver, will open May 13 at the Center Theatre
Group's Kirk Douglas Theatre. CTG artistic director Michael Ritchie said the
piece will replace the previously announced "Tynan," which was
postponed because the show's star, Malcolm McDowell, developed a schedule
conflict. "We remain excited about presenting this play with Malcolm and
expect to find a time to present it in an upcoming season," said Ritchie.

Studio Theatre in Washington, DC, has booked Tynan, Richard Nelson's new adaptation of the diaries of Kenneth Tynan, the only theatre critic of the last 50 years that theatre people seem to think was cool or worth dramatizing and lionizing. (Don't hold your breath for a one-man show called Brantley or Simon.) The play will run at the Kirk Theatre in L.A. later with spring, with Malcolm McDowell in the title role. Philip Goodwin, who bears a resemblance to the thin, angular, long-faced Tynan, will play the part in DC.

Malcolm is returning to the stage for the first time in 15
years! Unfortunately for me it's 3000 miles away, but I actually did attend what
would be the ''premiere'' of the play when I first met Malcolm in 1991. You can
read about it here The
Diaries of Kenneth Tynan
The new 2009-10 season of work by Center Theatre Group at its Kirk Douglas
Theatre in Los Angeles will feature a world premiere by Lisa Kron, Malcolm
McDowell as drama critic Kenneth Tynan and a new play by In the Continuum writer
Danai Gurira. Tynan is billed as "the wickedly candid play" about the
influential drama critic Kenneth Tynan, to be played by acclaimed actor Malcolm
McDowell. It will makes its U.S. debut May 6-June 6, 2010. Tynan is based on the
book "The Diaries of Kenneth Tynan" edited by John Lahr, and adapted
for the stage by Richard Nelson with Colin Chambers. Nelson will direct.

Malcolm - "How do you
expect to do that? I could tell you, but it would scare the shit out of
you."
